BUSINESS NEWS FOR 2015-2016:
Paul Hughes, CEO of ESCOAtlantic, LLC, participated in a discussion at the University of Amsterdam Law School in November 2015, focused on the question, "To what extent should financial markets incorporate social and environmental data and trends into their on-going activities and analyses? To what extent can they incorporate such data? Other participants included Irenee May, Managing Director at the Royal Bank of Scotland, who is former Global Head of Hedge Funds for RBS Asset Management, based in London; and now is Senior Relationship Manager for Financial Institutions (Hedge Funds, Asset Managers, Sovereign Wealth Funds, and Banks) for RBS in Stamford, CT; and Cynthia Williams, Osler Chair in Business Law at the Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto and Professor of Law, Markets and Behavior at the University of Amsterdam Law School. The debate focused on Governor of the Bank of England's recent speech "The Tragedy of the Horizon," in which Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, contended that climate change is a major, unpriced risk on the balance sheet of banks, pension funds, other investors and insurance companies, and that it could cause another financial system disruption when and as investors seek to sell the "stranded assets" of oil, gas and coal. The speech has provoked quite a bit of controversy, with many bankers and other investors thinking that Carney has gone beyond his proper remit. Thus, the speech should provide a good focal point for discussion of the responsibilities of financial institutions such as banks, insurance companies and pension funds for the integration of climate change risk into their financial models.
